Only 10 bottles are available of Yvon Métras L’Ultime 2018, a rare cuvée made only in exceptional harvests, and right now it’s more than $45 off with free shipping! Yvon Métras took over the family domaine near Villié-Morgon in 1988, and became a devoted follower of Marcel Lapierre and a strong advocate of natural wine. His estate became a leading light of Beaujolais, farming a small, entirely organic vineyard of about five hectares and vinifying with native yeasts and little or no sulfur. L’Ultime is the most prestigious wine in his portfolio, made only in exceptional harvests, from the domain’s old vines grown biodynamically in sandy soils of loam and granite.

The 2018 is 100% Gamay from the Fleurie appellation, prized for its red fruit aromas and a lingering, fruity palate. Its rarity comes from the cuvée being made only in outstanding years, and demand for the domaine’s wines greatly outstrips supply. Yvon is a widely lauded leader in the natural wine movement, and he has also passed his passion on to his son Jules, who makes wines in a similar spirit

About The Producer

Yvon Metras is one of the central figures of the natural wine movement in Beaujolais, a quiet, intensely focused vigneron who farms a small holding in Fleurie entirely by hand using biodynamic principles. He has been tending his vines without synthetic chemicals or added sulfur for decades, long before natural wine became a talking point in wine bars and wine media. Metras learned from his father and has always operated on the belief that great wine begins and ends in the vineyard. L'Ultime is Metras's final selection of the vintage, drawn from his oldest vines in Fleurie and produced in quantities so small that it rarely surfaces in normal retail channels. The wine ferments with native yeasts in large wooden vessels and is bottled without fining, filtration, or sulfur additions. In a region too often reduced to its most commercial expressions, Metras represents the profound end of what Gamay from granite soils in Beaujolais can be. His wines have developed an intensely loyal following among sommeliers and collectors who seek out exactly the kind of unmanipulated, place-specific wine he produces.
