Consulting winemaker Philippe Melka partnered with in-house winemaker Matt Sands on this stunning Russian River Pinot! Those two names are iconic enough on their own – so to team them up on a project like this? It’s kind of like if Sabrina Carpenter and Gracie Abrams were to come out with a duet... iconic. Life changing. Awe-striking. All of that, in Pinot Noir form, is what’s up today – from the grape-sourcing prowess of Waypoint, whose elegant expressions of single-vineyard wines showcase the beautiful diversity and expansiveness of California’s terroir.
Not to mention, Starscape Vineyard is primed for superstardom, just like the Ritchie Vineyard in the ‘90s and 2000s. Set in the immaculate “Middle Reach” of the Russian River Valley – tucked between the iconic Westside and Eastside Roads – this vineyard used to be one of just four estate vineyards in the iconic Goldeneye winery portfolio, when it was known as Floodgate. Farmed since 2012 by Chris Walden, the vineyard is known for producing classically-styled Russian River Pinot Noirs, just like – you guessed it – this one!
Black cherries, cherry cola, Christmas spices galore (like cranberries, mulled with cinnamon and clove, and a zesty slice of orange peel) plus some rooty herbs – is that sassafras I detect? This is a big, bright breath of fresh air of a Pinot Noir – juicy, round, long, and incredibly powerful! It is undeniably Russian River – in that same sort of Kosta Browne, overt and intense style that melts your mind and steals your heart in all the right ways. From this prestigious plot and these legendary names, this is a whirlwind of a deal to jump on straight away!
PAIRING IDEAS: Grilled chicken thighs rubbed with za’atar, with an olive tapenade, steamy naan bread, and grilled peppers and onions on the side, are going to be just swell with this juicy, subtly spicy Pinot!
