The intensely golden-yellow 2022 Forster Pechstein Riesling GG VDP.Grosse Lage is, as always, highly complex, pure, intense and fresh on the dense, saline and herbal, dramatically flinty (and slightly oaky) nose, as if a volcano had spit out the wine from its inner depth and laid it down on a bed of basalt. Full-bodied, intense and rich yet also tight and thrillingly saline on the palate, this is an elegant, powerful, tightly structured and lemony Pechstein with mandarin aromas and very fine tannins. The finish is very intense and complex, mesomorphic yet also fleshy and fruity. All in all, it's not only an exceptional Riesling but also a great Pechstein. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2024.

The 2022 Riesling Forster Pechstein Grosses Gewächs sample was drawn from a used tonneau, but the final blend includes new wood. The nose is restrained, slightly smoky and reveals just a little stone fruit. The palate is smooth with the oak, creamy, made gentler with fruit, but the wine's essential smokiness and hermetic nature, for now, hides behind that more charming facade of creamy, smooth oak. I expect the oak will make the austere Pechstein a little gentler, but its essential nature will remain unchanged. (Bone-dry)
