Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino 2019

In 2018, after losing 80% of his crop to late frost in 2017, Vincenzo Abbruzzese made the extraordinary decision to forego producing a Brunello altogether, giving his vines time to restore their energy. Valdicava was rewarded in 2019 with both quality and quantity, and the wine shows it. James Suckling awarded 97, Wine Enthusiast 96, Decanter 95, and Vinous 95. James Suckling described intense aromas of black cherries, oranges, and cedar, very perfumed, medium to full-bodied, with firm tannins and a structured, toned finish that will come through nicely with a few more years in bottle. Decanter called it methodically expressive, with fresh berries offset by dried florals, tea, tobacco, and cedar, perfumes of orange oil and rose building on the palate, with fine-grained tannins and steely acidity. A wine of elegant flow and decades ahead of it. Very limited. Grab yours now.
