Bramante Martini purchased the land on which Valdicava now stands north of Montalcino in 1953. His grandson Vincenzo Abbruzzese has been at the helm since the early 1990s, farming some of the appellation’s finest vineyards on the northern slopes of Montalcino and producing wines of considerable power and longevity. The estate is known for wines that carry more concentration and volume than most Montalcino neighbors: longer time in French oak, a more structured approach, and a character that rewards patience above all. James Suckling awarded the 2013 98 points, Wine Advocate 96 (listed on the label as WE96), Vinous 93, and Wine Spectator 92. James Suckling described a juicy, complex Brunello with berry, dried mushroom, and flower character, orange peel, full body, firm and velvety tannins, and a flavorful finish that goes on for minutes, saying he loves the balance. Monica Larner called it beautifully saturated, with ripe cherry, black fruit tones, ample volume, and long staying power. Now over 12 years from harvest, this is in a beautiful window. Incredibly priced for a 98-point Brunello. Very limited.
