There is no more storied name in Brunello di Montalcino than Biondi-Santi. The family at Tenuta Il Greppo did not simply make great wine at their estate; they more or less invented the category, with Ferruccio Biondi-Santi isolating and cultivating the Brunello clone of Sangiovese in the late 19th century and pioneering the wine's capacity for remarkable aging. To open a bottle of Biondi-Santi Brunello is to drink history, and the estate's oldest vintages remain among the most collectible wines in all of Italy.

The 2019 is a generous, complex vintage that brought abundant high-quality fruit to Montalcino, and Biondi-Santi has channeled it into something both expressive and classically restrained. Critics have uniformly praised it: 99 points from Falstaff, 98 points from Jeb Dunnuck and Vanessa Conlin MW, and 97 points apiece from Wine Advocate (Monica Larner), James Suckling, and Vinous (Eric Guido). Suckling called it "very perfumed and fragrant... the legend lives," while Guido described it as "classic to the core," with "silky-smooth" texture and "tremendous length." The Wine Palate praised its "gorgeously sleek and sophisticated" palate with a "seamless finish" that reveals itself over many minutes.

This is a wine for the cellar (best after 2027 per most critics), but it is also one of those Brunellos that rewards patience ten times over. With scores this high, pedigree this deep, and a discount from retail that rarely materializes for the flagship Biondi-Santi, this is an opportunity serious Brunello collectors should not overlook. About The Producer

Biondi-Santi, founded in 1865 by the visionary Ferruccio Biondi Santi, is a cornerstone of Italian winemaking and a beacon of excellence in Montalcino, Tuscany. It is a rare phenomenon for a wine to owe its very existence to a single individual, but Brunello di Montalcino is an extraordinary exception. Ferruccio Biondi Santi not only crafted the first Brunello in 1888 but also set the stage for what would become one of Italy's most prestigious wine denominations. The Biondi-Santi legacy is carried forward by subsequent generations, including notable winemakers Tancredi and Franco Biondi-Santi, who have upheld the family’s tradition of producing wines renowned for their elegance and extraordinary longevity. Today, the estate remains dedicated to this tradition, producing wines that are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and remarkable aging potential.
