The 2018 Côte Rôtie Leyat comes from the Côte Brune, just above the Côte Bodin. It’s incredible wine in its own right and has a powerful, masculine style in its smoky black (and some blue) fruits as well as ground pepper, stems, and graphite. Full-bodied and blockbuster styled on the palate, yet with awesome purity and flawless balance, it needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will have 20+ of prime drinking.

The 2018 Côte Rôtie Bertholon comes from a site just above Les Grandes Places and a slightly flatter, more clay-driven terroir. It too was brought up in used barrels. Cassis, pepper, graphite, and some exotic violet and floral notes define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied and packs plenty of muscle on the palate, with ripe, velvety tannins as well as a great finish.

95 - Vinous (Côte-Bodin) -

Lurid ruby color. Suggestions of violet, olive, incense and dark chocolate complement powerful, smoke-tinged blueberry and cassis aromas. Coats the palate with sweet black and blue fruit, licorice and violet pastille flavors that are underscored by a vein of smoky minerality. Blends richness and energy with a steady hand and finishes impressively long and broad, with steadily building tannins adding shape and final grip.

96+ - Jeb Dunnuck (Montmain) -

The 2018 Côte Rôtie Montmain comes from a steep, south-facing parcel that’s always one of the first to be harvested. It’s a meaty, black olive, and iron-laced effort that has medium to full body, tons of obvious minerality, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s another wine that needs to be forgotten for a solid 5-6 years yet will deliver the goods.

96 - Vinous (Le Champon) -

Glass-staining violet color. Ripe, smoke- and spice-accented cherry and black raspberry on the powerfully scented nose, along with a suave floral nuance that builds with air. Juicy and appealingly sweet, offering deeply concentrated red and blue fruit liqueur and floral pastille flavors with hints of succulent herbs and licorice. Round, polished tannins add shape to a very long, floral-tinged finish that leaves a sappy boysenberry note and a touch of smoky bacon behind. Made with 100% whole clusters.

The 2018 Côte Rôtie But De Mont is a more plush, ripe, supple beauty that has ample meaty, savory, spicy notes in a full-bodied, mouth-filling, opulent style. It shows the sunny style of the vintage and is flat-out gorgeous on the palate, with an expansive, seamless profile that just begs to be drunk. Despite its up-front charm, it has the balance and purity to evolve for two decades.

Inky ruby. Potent, smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of ripe dark berries, cherry-cola, licorice and vanilla, along with a hint of incense in the background. Chewy, broad and alluringly sweet, offering deeply concentrated blackberry, cherry preserve, spicecake and violet pastille flavors, with a building suggestion of smoky minerality on the back half. Shows tremendous energy and sharp detail on an extremely long, penetrating and floral-driven finish that's shaped by youthfully chewy tannins.

About The Producer

Domaine Stéphane Ogier is a family estate based in Ampuis with roots in the Northern Rhône stretching back seven generations, though the domaine’s modern identity began to take shape in the late 20th century when the family shifted from selling grapes to bottling their own wines. Stéphane Ogier joined the estate in 1997 after training in Burgundy, bringing a renewed focus on parcel-by-parcel vinification and a style that balances the power of Syrah with finesse, purity, and transparency to terroir. Today, the domaine is considered one of the benchmark producers of the Northern Rhône, with acclaimed holdings in Côte-Rôtie and a broad range of wines from Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Seyssuel, and the Collines Rhodaniennes, all crafted with a modern, thoughtful approach that respects both tradition and site expression.
