The Signorello family began growing grapes on the Silverado Trail to sell to other wineries in 1977 before transitioning fully into winemaking in 1985. The Padrone Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate's homage to its founder, Ray Signorello Sr., and it's made to be bold, commanding, and influential, just like its namesake. The wine is sourced from the estate's own hillside vineyards along the Silverado Trail, on rocky and well-drained volcanic soils that push the vines to produce small, concentrated berries with stunning depth.
In October 2017, the Atlas Fire tore through the property and destroyed the winery, tasting room, and family home, even as the surrounding vineyards survived untouched. Owner Ray Signorello Jr. spent the better part of seven years rebuilding, ultimately reopening in 2024 with a state-of-the-art, fire-resistant winery built into the hillside itself. The comeback has been validated in recent Padrone vintages that have continued to earn high scores from major critics.
“Poised and supremely refined, the 2023 delivers the goods.” –Vinous, 97 Points
The 2023 Padrone comes from a blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec rounding out the structure. The wine spends roughly 18 months in French oak and is bottled unfined and unfiltered, a hands-off approach designed to preserve the purity of the fruit and give the wine more aging potential. The big-bodied, opulent glass is loaded with dark cherry, plum, blueberry jam, and dark chocolate, layered with notes of cedar, dried herbs, licorice, and a touch of lavender, all wrapped in the resonant texture Padrone is known for.
