The aromas of the 2021 Screaming Eagle are so precise and beautifully compact, giving a refined sense of finesse through savoury incense and dried spearmint intermixed with pure black fruit and graphite notes. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine opens up to an expansive mouthfeel with perfect concentration and depth of flavours, exuding black currants, just-picked blackberry, and Bing cherry, with a foundation of ironstone minerality. Palate etching tannins are multi-dimensional. It is a serious wine with tension, remarkable grip, intensity, and a firm spine of zesty acidity that brightens the lengthy finish. Perfectly balanced and expressive and even a bit savage. Best after 2027.

Darker and more powerful than the 2023, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon offers cassis and black currants intermixed with smoked tobacco, rose petal, liquid violets, crushed stone, and a hint of iron. It's one of the most impressive, profound young wines I've ever tasted as well as the most powerful Screaming Eagle I've experienced. Full-bodied and dense on the palate, with serious structure, it maintains the rare sense of purity, class, and balance that's the hallmark of this estate. Hide bottles for a decade and they will keep for 40-50 years. Drink 2035-2075.

The aromatics on this are stunning, offering black cherries, blackcurrants, lead pencil, spearmint, Spanish cedar. and wild roses. It’s medium-bodied and starts slowly on the palate and then takes off with muscular tension. Nicely chewy, toned and firm. Goes on for minutes. Flexing and showing its propensity for longevity. Rock on. Best after 2028 and beyond.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, with 18% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc in the blend, is deep garnet-purple in color. A tad shy to start, it soon unfurls to offer notes of freshly crushed black and red currants, wild blueberries, and iris followed by nuances of anise, forest floor, mint tea, and pencil shavings. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a very firm frame of exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and wonderful tension supporting the tightly knit black fruit and floral layers, finishing long and minerally. It will need a good 5-10 years to blossom into the real-head turner it promises to be.

About The Producer

Jean Phillips, a former real estate agent, bought the 57 acres of Oakville vineyard in 1986 which was planted with a mix of varieties except for the 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. Jean hired Richard Peterson as a consultant and later hired his daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett as the first winemaker. The entire vineyard was replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The 1992 vintage received a 99 point score from Robert Parker becoming one of the most celebrated and expensive wines in Napa Valley.
