Even more perfumed and upfront aromatically, the 2010 Saxum Broken Stones is a brilliant effort. A multi-vineyard blend of 63% Syrah, 19% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, and 3% Petite Sirah that was aged mostly in new French oak, it offers up a gorgeously pure array of black raspberry, charcoal, licorice, lavender, and assorted floral qualities on the nose. This flows to a full-bodied, deft, and elegant palate that has no hard edges, a weightless feel, and masses of fine, yet firm tannin on the finish. Give bottles another year or three, and then drink over the following 12-15 years.

A benchmark estate for California, Saxum, under the helm of superstar winemaker Justin Smith, continues to produce some of the most compelling, profound wines on the planet. While Smith’s wines are always full-flavored and intense, there has been a stylistic change over recent vintages, with the wines showing more obvious tannin and structure, as well as additional minerality and savory qualities. These 2010s exemplify this change and are all serious, structured efforts that will need bottle age to blossom.

Savory notes meld into black olives, crushed rocks and graphite as the 2010 Broken Stones opens up in the glass. The 2010 stands out for its length and persistence. I had expected the 2010 to be a little bit more expressive, but post-bottling it remains tightly coiled and reticent. Readers will have to be a bit more patient here. Broken Stones is 63% Syrah, 19% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache and 3% Petite Sirah.

About The Producer

Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Grenache, Syrah, and Mataro based blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. Rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, sunny days, and cooling ocean breezes are some of the keys to Saum's incredible success. They respect their land and farm everything sustainably without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Production is kept at 5000 – 6000 cases a year divided between nine different cuvees, Broken Stones, James Berry Vineyard, G2 Vineyard, Bone Rock, Rocket Block, Booker Vineyard, Paderewski Vineyard, Heart Stone Vineyard, and Terry Hoage Vineyard.
