Le Lucére is one of those prized, single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcinos that never misses, no matter the year. Maybe it has to do with the vineyard – sitting around 260 to 280 meters elevation, surrounded by forests on three sides, with eastern exposure, a steeply sloping hill, healthy wind flow, and unforgiving silty, clayey soils. Or maybe it has to do with the winemaking strategies employed at San Filippo – starting with meticulous vineyard management and organic farming, with a stern focus on expressing the terroir with selective harvesting, minimal intervention, and varied styles of barrels used for aging.

Most likely, it’s all of the above, coming together in the perfect alchemy of sourcing, site, and stewardship. San Filippo sits on 22 hectares of prime Tuscan real estate, and produced their first Brunello in 1977. Now, under the new ownership of Roberto Gianelli, they claim their place as one of Montalcino’s finest. When Roberto bought the property a few years back, he immediately invested in a full-scale renovation of the winemaking facilities and a rejuvenation of the vineyard property. The results have been dramatically impressive, and a new era of San Filippo drinkers is awakening to the limitless potential of this flourishing estate.

The 2020 Le Lucére is all roses and violets, and silky, spicy black cherries, with crushed blackberries and a kick of minty freshness. Aromatic, elegant, and massively powerful, this is just easing into drinkability at 5 years young, with about two (or more) decades of life ahead of it yet. The low-yielding, stressed-out vines, steep hillside, and dense, cracked earth of Le Lucére allow only the strongest grapes to survive, producing some of the best Brunello you’ll ever taste. We are forever fans of this winery, and their prized Brunello is something we’ll never tire of… Grab at least two for yourself to get complimentary shipping included!

PAIRING IDEAS: Give this bangin’ Brunello a rich, braised pork ragu over thick, hand-rolled pici (a fat, spaghetti-like pasta that originated in Tuscany), and bask in gastronomic nirvana.

About The Producer

Situated in the splendid area of Eastern Montalcino close to Biondi Santi’s Il Greppo and La Serena, the wines of San Filippo are ageworthy and elegant, though very approachable in their youth. The estate totals 22 hectares, 11 of which are under vine, dedicated mostly to Sangiovese, with a small olive grove as well. Founded in 1972 (1977 was the first year of production), the estate was recently purchased by Roberto Giannelli who restored and renovated the entire facility. With the help of consulting winemaker Paolo Caciorgna, Roberto is producing 2500 cases of top-flight Brunello aged in Slavonian and Allier oak casks each year, as well as 800 cases of a delicious Rosso di Montalcino aged 6 months in used barriques and large casks.
