Anytime I see Romuald Valot on my tasting list, I get a flurry of giddy butterflies. If you’ve tried this producer’s wines, you know what an incredibly high-value product they make. We firmly believe that Romuald Valot is one of the best under-the-radar finds in Burgundy today, and this 2022 Les Noizons from the Pommard appellation only further cements our theory.

Romuald was the son of a vigneron in a long line of vignerons that came before, all focused on Burgundy. Yet, growing up – working for the big houses of Burgundy, in those famed Grand Cru vineyards – he turned away from wine after becoming jaded with what went on behind the scenes. His vision of the “one man and a field” approach utilized by his ancestors had been replaced by a barrage of commercial farming practices – and the notion of terroir was lost in his mind. He couldn’t afford to buy his own parcel, which meant he couldn’t make the wines he wanted. So he packed up and moved to Beaujolais, where the dream he envisioned could still be sought. His status grew, wine by wine, plot by plot – becoming revered as a vigneron with a knack for capturing the spirit of his vines in liquid form.

Now, he has returned to Burgundy and has carefully selected vineyards with pedigree and character with a renewed focus. His vision of showcasing the very best expressions of the land – farming them organically with great care – has led to wines worthy of greater discussion. The 2022 Les Noizons Pinot Noir grows on the mid-slope of a hill and charms with its powerful yet balanced structure. Notes of stewed plums, raspberry preserves, Bing cherries, red roses, freshly tilled soil, and a hint of cedar and vanilla on the tingly and fresh finish make this all-around luxurious and captivating to sip on. Romuald does it again, and now that you can get three bottles for a little more than the typical price of one (with free shipping on three!) – it’s a no-brainer to take home a few of these!

PAIRING IDEAS: Turkey’s on the brain, and one of my favorite ways to use up leftovers is this incredible gumbo recipe. Savory, smoky, and lightly spiced, it is a gorgeous accompaniment to this Red Burgundy!
