The Viberti family has been tending vines in Castiglione Falletto, one of Barolo’s most prestigious villages, for three generations. Grandfather Cesare bought his first parcel in the famed Rocche di Castiglione vineyard in the 1940s, then added a parcel in Bricco Boschis in the 1950s. For decades, the family sold their fruit to the region’s historic houses, until grandson Claudio launched the Roccheviberti label in 2002.

Bricco Boschis is a fascinating spot, and quite a bit of a rarity. For decades, the Cavalotto family were the only ones making Barolo from it, so much so that many assumed it was their monopole. Lo and behold, other growers had vines there, but mostly Dolcetto. Claudio took his old Dolcetto vines, regrafted them to Nebbiolo, and in 2014 made his first Barolo Bricco Boschis… a pretty great example of patience and conviction paying off.

Everything here is done the old-school way, from organic farming and native yeast fermentations to long macerations and aging in large traditional casks rather than small new barriques. All of that is in service of letting the fruit and terroir tell the story, and the 2021 Bricco Boschis does so with so much poise. Violets and cherry kick things off, then drifting into wet stone, forest undergrowth, a spoonful of plum jam, and a cooling hint of mint. It’s taut and vertical, with tight, grippy tannins and a finish that goes on and on. Because this is on the young and structured side, a little decanting (or a few years in the cellar) is the move, but I won’t tattle if you pop one early. Half off, with free shipping on 3 or more, makes that easy to justify!

FOOD PAIRINGS: Piedmont’s own answer is tajarin (those thin, golden egg noodles) with a slow-cooked hare ragù, but any stewed game or rich, braised dish will do.

About The Producer

The Viberti family's story in Castiglione Falletto is one of quiet, generational patience finally rewarded. Grandfather Cesare purchased his first parcel in the famed Rocche di Castiglione vineyard in the 1940s, followed by a parcel of Bricco Boschis in the 1950s, and for decades he sold his coveted fruit to the historic wineries of the region, becoming a revered expert in the terroir of Castiglione Falletto. It wasn't until 2002, when third-generation Claudio Viberti took the reins, that the family began bottling their wines in earnest under their own label. Claudio refined the farming practices from the start, eliminating all chemicals and herbicides while drastically lowering yields across the estate's 4.5 hectares. The name Roccheviberti is itself a statement of intent, fusing the family name with the Rocche di Castiglione grand cru that sits at the heart of their holdings. Castiglione Falletto is celebrated throughout the Barolo zone for its aromatic potency and distinctive elegance, producing wines with finer tannins than neighboring communes while retaining the structure and aging potential the appellation is known for. Claudio's two single-vineyard Barolos (Rocche di Castiglione and Bricco Boschis) show just how different two parcels in the same village can be, and both have earned serious attention from collectors who follow Piedmont closely.
