Jeb Dunnuck awarded the 2022 Pulido Walker Mt. Veeder Chardonnay a seriously impressive 97 points, and this tiny production, high elevation Napa white absolutely earns the attention. Mt. Veeder's volcanic soils and cool mountain air push Chardonnay somewhere altogether different from the valley floor: tense, mineral, and laser focused, with the kind of freshness that makes you wonder why everyone isn't growing Chardonnay up here. A must find for white Burgundy lovers who haven't yet discovered what Napa can do.

About The Producer

Pulido Walker was founded by Miguel Pulido and Rob Walker, two friends who share a passion for Burgundy and a conviction that the high-altitude volcanic soils of Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley could produce Chardonnay of comparable depth and precision. The project started small and has grown carefully, with Pulido bringing a Burgundian winemaking philosophy shaped by years of studying and drinking the wines of the Cote de Beaune. The focus is on farming at elevation where cooler temperatures and dramatic diurnal swings produce grapes with natural acidity and complexity that requires little intervention in the cellar. The Mt. Veeder Chardonnay is fermented in neutral and lightly used French oak to preserve the varietal character and avoid the buttery, heavily oaked style that defined California Chardonnay for a generation. The approach has resonated strongly with the sommelier community and with Burgundy drinkers who have historically dismissed California Chardonnay as too rich and oaky. Pulido Walker occupies a growing niche of California producers making Chardonnay with restraint and precision, and the Mt. Veeder wines are consistently cited as among the finest examples of elevation-driven, terroir-focused white wine produced in Napa Valley.
