About The Producer
Poggio di Sotto is the estate that quietly changed the conversation about what Brunello di Montalcino could be. Located in the southern Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone, the domaine was founded in 1990 by Piero Palmucci and built a fierce reputation for wines of extraordinary purity and longevity before being acquired by Claudio Tipa's ColleMassari group in 2011. Tipa continued the farming philosophy his predecessor established, maintaining the commitment to old vines, long macerations, and extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks without compromising on quality or yield.
The estate farms roughly twelve hectares on clay and galestro soils at altitude, producing one of the most consistently celebrated Brunello di Montalcino in the appellation. The wines regularly earn scores in the upper nineties and attract intense collector interest, with older vintages commanding significant premiums at auction. The Rosso di Montalcino gives access to the same estate philosophy at an earlier drinking window and a fraction of the price. Wine Advocate has awarded multiple vintages perfect or near-perfect scores, and Poggio di Sotto is now considered one of the benchmarks against which other Brunello producers are measured.
