Poggio di Sotto was founded by Piero Palmucci on the southern slopes of Montalcino, in the Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone, where schistic galestro soils and altitude produce wines of remarkable freshness and mineral precision. Palmucci sold in 2011 to Claudio Tipa (owner of Grattamacco and ColleMassari), and the estate's commitment to traditional, minimally interventionist Brunello has continued without interruption: vinification in truncated cone-shaped wooden vats and cement tanks with a minimum of 30 days maceration, followed by 36 months of aging in 30-hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels, no filtering, no fining. Decanter has called the wines quintessential Brunello: not blockbusters, not hammered with extraction, but wines of mouthwatering elegance and freshness in the very top ranks of Montalcino. The 2016 is a wine of remarkable character, showing orange zest and citrusy lift alongside dark plum and wild cherry, with finely chiseled mineral notes and the classic austerity and drive of this estate in a great vintage. Farr Vintners awarded 99, Wine Advocate 98, Jeb Dunnuck 98, Rupert Valentini 98, Vinous 97, Wine Spectator 97, and Decanter 96. The pricing here is incredible for scores and a pedigree of this level. These won't last long.
