About The Producer
Poderi Aldo Conterno was founded in 1969 by Aldo Conterno, who struck out on his own after leaving the family winery, Giacomo Conterno, in his brother's hands. Based in Bussia, in the commune of Monforte d'Alba, the estate built its reputation on three distinct cru vineyards within Bussia — Romirasco, Cicala, and Colonnello — each capturing a different facet of Nebbiolo grown on the same fabled south/southwest-facing, clay-and-limestone hillside. Aldo passed away in 2012, and the estate is now run by his sons Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo, who have kept the traditional Slavonian-oak aging regime that defines the house style: powerful, structured Barolos built for long cellaring rather than early drinking. The Cicala bottling in particular is prized for its firm tannic backbone and "attractive freshness," a wine that tends to be more monolithic and vertical in shape in its youth than its sibling crus, but which rewards patience with real depth and precision. Alongside these single-vineyard wines, the estate also produces Granbussia, a Riserva blend of all three crus made only in exceptional years, which stands as one of the most sought-after wines in all of Barolo.
