Luc Morlet is a Napa Valley wonder. The Burgundian transplant has seamlessly made the transition from fifth-generation Avenay-Val-d’Or scion to revered California cult winemaker – and his Passionnément bottlings are among his most adored releases. We have limited vertical 3-packs (2013, 2014, and 2015 vintages) for a few dollars more than what ONE of these bottles usually costs… plus free shipping!

Named for the tender French endearment "Je t'aime, un peu, beaucoup, passionnément" (“I love you, a little, a lot, passionately") and dedicated to Jodie Morlet, Passionnément is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the finest barrels of the revered Oakville Bench. It is the crowning gesture of a love story that crossed an ocean… Luc Morlet, the fifth generation of a French winegrowing family in Champagne, spent his youth on the family Pinot Noir and Chardonnay domaine before relocating to California to join his American sweetheart, Jodie, and founding Morlet Family Vineyards in 2006.

Trained under legendary Bordeaux consultant Jacques Boissenot and famed for his tenure as winemaker at Peter Michael, Luc is one of the rare vintners to have earned 100-point scores across multiple varieties. Each Passionnément is night-picked by hand, sorted berry-by-berry, fermented with native yeast, and raised in French oak, giving this some solid Old World rigor reimagined with California fruit.

Across these three consecutive vintages, the wines reveal both the signature touch of Passionnément (power, restraint, poise) and range. The 2013 (98 points) is the most classically Oakville of the trio – a warm, generous vintage that provides the wine a rich and sun-drenched frame… dense cassis and black plum enveloped in cocoa and cedar, with noticeably smooth and substantial tannins. The 2014 (98 points) leans into elegance and may be the most complete of the group, showing graphite, juicy dark fruits, cooked earth, licorice, and baking spices. Deep and rich without ever feeling heavy, with silky and plush tannins. The 2015 (97 points) comes from a low-yielding, tightly wound vintage, lending this a precise and concentrated dark berry and violet thread, with fine graphite minerality and a taut, ageworthy spine.

Together they really demonstrate what makes Passionnément special, weaving Old and New Worlds into something altogether sensational. Each of these typically retails for $375 on their own – but you can can all three COMBINED for a few dollars more, just $399, free shipping included. A next-level bargain for three next-level wines… best of luck!

About The Producer

Luc Morlet has a new estate winery located in an old stone building on Route 29, north of St. Helena and across from the Markham Winery. A native of France, Morlet was mentored at Newton Vineyards between 1996 and 2001 by the likes of John Kongsgaard and Michel Rolland. From there, he became the key winemaker at Peter Michael Winery, where he still consults along with his brother, Nicolas. His Sonoma bottlings will be reviewed in the next issue of The Wine Advocate, but these Napa cuvees come from both estate vineyards and purchased fruit (primarily from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville). All of these Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the Cabernet Franc, are fabulous wines. Although they are undoubtedly expensive, they are all at the top end of the qualitative hierarchy in Napa Valley.
