Founded in 1816, Mas Amiel is the largest independent producer in Maury, which is inside the Languegoc-Roussilon appellation in the southwest of France. The winery is famous for its fortified Grenache based wines that make perfect follow ups to hearty winter feasts when the weather is chilly, and the air thick with nostalgia.

The 1985 Mas Amiel Maury Rouge is an Oxidative Vin Doux Naturel made with the mutage technique which consists of adding alcohol to the must during vinification in order to cause fermentation to stop. The resulting wine retains a portion of unprocessed natural sugar. The wine is then racked into glass carboys stored in the open air for 1 year where the wine is subjected to the rays of the sun and thermal shocks. It was then matured for over 30 years in large oak casks that are more than a century old.

That slow, oxidative aging process results in an intense sweet wine that is rich with notes of raisins, toffee, spices, and tea. Bring on the hot sticky toffee pudding please!

If you love Port, Madeira or Sherry you must give Maury Rouge full consideration. It’s almost like a combination of them all!

About The Producer

Unfortunately for the old bishop, he wagered his 80-hectare property which was transferred to civil engineer Raymond Etienne Amiel. If you know anything about French winemaking at the time, you know that phylloxera would begin to ravage the area soon after. In comes Camille Gouzy, a winemaking merchant, who joined forces with Amiel’s son to rebuild the vineyards by adapting American vines. It worked, and Mas Amiel’s production began to soar. By 1907, they began crafting the fortified wines they became renowned for.
