The Antinori family has made wine in the picturesque rolling hills of Tuscany for nearly 700 years. Guado al Tasso is in the small but renowned Bolgheri DOC, located on the upper coast of Maremma, roughly 100 kilometers from Florence. With over 320 hectares of vineyards positioned in a luscious plain surrounded by undulating hillsides known as the Bolgheri Amphitheatre, the estate benefits from the nearby sea’s constant breezes that mellow out the considerable summer heat.
2021 experienced a long drought through the summer, but because the previous winter had plenty of rainfall, the groundwater reserves retained the necessary soil moisture for the entirety of the growing season. The harvest showed grapes with ripe fruit character and exceptional concentration, defining 2021 as a spectacular vintage. This wine is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc, and 13% Merlot, from vineyards grown upon alluvial soils with clay-sand, clay-loam, and “scheletro” rocky deposit compositions, all contributing to the wine’s complexity and elegance.
All in all, the 2021 Guado al Tasso is fully loaded – with the ability to age over the decades, and a decidedly Tuscan flair to the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine. Aromas of blackberries and blood orange with accents of tobacco, dark roast coffee, and licorice lead things off, followed by flavors of black cherry, pomegranate, violets, wild herbs, dark chocolate, and old leather, with a penetrating acidic backbone. This is a beautiful wine with supersoft tannins and an everlasting finish, bound to last decades longer in the cellar. All the critics agree, but since we don’t have much, you’ll need to sprint to the cart stat to secure yours! Highly recommend getting enough to try a few times over the next decade or two!
PAIRING IDEAS: Florentine steak it is, with a Tuscan flair of a balsamic and rosemary marinade, plus a side of herby roasted red potatoes and a little gem salad with shaved mimolette and fresh lemon.
