A village-level Gevrey-Chambertin from old vines is not a consolation prize. In the hands of a winemaker as meticulous as Nicolas Potel, it is one of the best expressions of what this legendary village can deliver when the ego and the price tag are stripped away and the terroir is allowed to speak without interference. The Vieilles Vignes designation at Roche de Bellene indicates sourcing exclusively from vines of at least 40 years of age, farmed organically, yielding low, and carrying the kind of concentration and depth that young vines simply cannot match. The 2021 vintage, with its frost-reduced yields and cool, gradual ripening, produced wines of crystalline purity and finesse, and this Gevrey shows it beautifully: bright and perfumed on the nose with red cherry, rose, and a whiff of woodsmoke, the palate focused and lifted with fine tannins and a lingering mineral finish. Drink it now or hold it through the late 2020s. A brilliant value from a great address.
