You know that feeling when a deal seems too good to be true? That was me standing in our warehouse, one antique wine glass in hand, before the washer finished its cycle on modern glassware, staring at the first wine up on the tasting list – a Bourgogne Pinot Noir from Maison Roche de Bellene. I love a good Bourgogne, but I'm rarely blown away. Then I flipped the bottle over. The back label read like a cheat sheet for quality: clay and limestone terroir, French oak, 100% malolactic fermentation, no fining, no filtration. Every right answer. So I poured it, and, well. I should get my hand slapped for what we're charging.
This is Premier Cru-level Burgundy wearing a regional label, the kind of bottle that would sit at $100 on a restaurant list without anyone blinking. It's a case buy. Full stop.
Maison Roche de Bellene is the négociant label founded by Nicolas Potel, one of Burgundy's most respected and beloved figures, who sadly passed away last summer at 56. His legacy is a house built on sourcing from old vines of 40 years or older, all farmed organically or sustainably, with an obsessive focus on terroir expression. The distinction worth knowing: Maison Roche de Bellene is the négociant arm, meaning Potel sourced and blended from the finest grower parcels across the Côte d'Or, while Domaine de Bellene represents his own private vineyard holdings. What you're getting here is the best of what Burgundy's top small growers had to offer in a beautiful 2022 vintage, assembled by a master of the craft.
My notes: Insane texture right out of the gate. Lush cranberry and red berry compote, a touch of toasty oak, holiday spice, and a subtle earthiness underneath. The tannins are chalky and fine, the acidity is bright and clean, and the finish is longer than any $20 Burgundy has any right to be. Drink it now, drink it often.
