Five cases only of an elegant and charming Premier Cru Burgundy from the remarkable Roche de Bellene at 50% off!
In the southern reach of Pommard, where the village slides toward Volnay, the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Bertins sits on more limestone in the soil than is typical for Pommard, so its wines come out a touch more elegant and lifted than the norm. It comes from the hands of Nicolas Potel, the son of the legendary Gérard Potel, who managed Domaine de la Pousse d'Or in Volnay and helped drive the rise of domaine-bottled Burgundy. Nicolas created Domaine de Bellene in 2005 and launched the négociant house Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008, naming it Bellene for the old name of the city of Beaune.
He worked with growers who are either certified organic or farming sustainably, with an emphasis on old vines of 40 years or more. The fruit is hand-picked into small bins, gently pressed in a vertical basket press, partly destemmed (about 40%, depending on the vintage), then fermented and matured in 500-litre French oak casks. The 2022 vintage brought in ripe, very clean fruit with charming vibrancy and freshness.
It evokes dark cherry, macerated plum, wild rose, cracked pepper, and firm, velvety tannins, a profile that gives a sense of the house style. It comes from a Premier Cru vineyard with a rare Volnay-like finesse inside a powerful appellation, in a vintage celebrated for complexity and richness while keeping freshness and elegance. Only five cases available, and you’ll want to procure as much as you can!
