This is a devastatingly pure expression from the steep, 1.5-hectare La Louisonne vineyard in the far northern end of Bué. With its ribbony, shallow, well-draining blue clay soils set over limestone bedrock, the site promises spectacular minerality tinged with saltiness and a velvet-clad texture. An impressive 18 months of age time in terracotta amphora and steel add to the textural thrill and overall purity.

Lifted aromas of lime zest, white peach, and crushed gooseberry layer over wild herbs, elderflower, and a streak of flinty chalk. The palate is precise and energetic, with tangerine oil, green apple, and ripe pear sliding across the taut frame of salty minerality and a chalky texture. The acidity is electric, with a long, stony, and mouthwatering finish culminating in a kiss of fennel and wet stone.

Majestic! So, so, so harmonious. And massively precise, elegant, and fresh. Color me thoroughly impressed, and I am certain any Sancerre lover will be equally charmed. Start with at least a few bottles, trust me (we won’t have enough for seconds!).
