Luciano Sandrone Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2008

Luciano Sandrone, who passed away in January 2023 after a long battle with illness, built his estate from a tiny 2.5-acre parcel on the Cannubi Boschis subzone of Cannubi that he purchased in 1977 while working as a cellar master at Marchesi di Barolo. His first vintage, produced in a small garage in 1978, sold out entirely at Vinitaly, and the rest was history. Sandrone became one of the defining voices of the "Barolo Boys" movement, bridging tradition and innovation with a rare instinct for balance that led fellow winemakers to say simply: "Sandrone never makes mistakes." The Cannubi Boschis (later renamed Aleste in tribute to his grandchildren Alessia and Stefano) was always the estate's heart, a single-vineyard expression of sandy, clay-and-calcareous soils that produce Nebbiolo of arresting elegance and class. The 2008 vintage was a year of very slow, gradual ripening throughout October, and the wine reflects it: gorgeously mid-weight, laced with sweet red cherries, flowers, spices, mint, and minerals, with a Pinot-like vibrancy and grace on the finish that Antonio Galloni called "dazzling." Vinous awarded 95, Wine Advocate 95, James Suckling 94, Wine Spectator 93. Well into its drinking window and beautifully formed, at an incredibly well-priced level for a library release of this caliber. Grab it before it's gone.
