Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, two natives of Bolgheri who believed in the extraordinary potential of this coastal strip of Tuscany. Following Eugenio's death in 2002, Cinzia has carried on with the same commitment to variety-specific excellence that made the estate famous: Messorio for Merlot, Paleo for Cabernet Franc, and Scrio for Syrah, the latter born in 1994 from Eugenio's desire to produce a wine of pure, uncompromising Syrah character, its name coming from the Tuscan dialect word for something pure, sincere, and upright. Production never exceeds 5,000 bottles. The 2019 is sourced from two parcels of Syrah: one 20-year-old plot on sandy soil, one on a different soil type, fermented in stainless steel and cement, then aged partially in new tonneaux and partially in truncated cement vats and ceramic vessels, with reductive winemaking to protect the natural fragrances of the grape. Wine Advocate awarded 98, noting a wine of remarkable precision that has little in common with previous vintages, understated and gracious, all class and all refinement. Vinous and Wine Spectator both scored it 95, and James Suckling 94. Polished, tight, and beautifully integrated, with black cherry, blackberry, floral, mineral, and toasted spice on the palate. The price for 3,800 bottles of this quality is exceptional. These are rare. Grab them.
