Could this be Italy’s greatest wine value of all time? We’ll let you be the judge of that. This is Biondi Santi’s FAMED Sangiovese BBS11 clone (with a touch of Cabernet), grown in the little-known Maremma region of Tuscany on their historic Castello di Montepò estate. 95 points and JUST $31 (plus free shipping) on three or more bottles... be still my ever-loving Tuscan wine heart!
The Biondi-Santi family sold their shares of their namesake Montalcino winery back in 2018 – perhaps the most storied winery in Italian history and the literal founding place of Brunello di Montalcino – and this was their swift and smart next move!
Castello di Montepò is the family’s 11th-century castle, set high on a hill overlooking a jaw-dropping 600-hectare estate, a little over 10 miles from the Mediterranean Sea and just about 20 miles south of the family’s origins in Montalcino. Jacopo Biondi Santi – at the helm of his family’s illustrious winery for decades – bought the Castello di Montepò in the early ‘80s, meticulously planting over 120 acres mostly to his family’s completely unique and prized Sangiovese BBS11 clone, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and a small parcel of Merlot, as well. Jacopo and his son, Tancredi, make the wines hand-in-hand here, and they speak about the potential of Scansano as though they traveled back in time to Montalcino over 50 years ago. We’ve said this to anyone who will listen – this is the next big region in Italy.
Their 2021 Morellino di Scansano is an expressive and pure iteration of their legendary Sangiovese Grosso BBS11 clone, exclusive to the Biondi Santi family, blended with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon for added textural richness. Grown on their pristine galestro soils, on their dreamy estate complete with a 1,000-year-old castle, this comes from the most remote and least populated part of Tuscany... an area that the most renowned producers (like Castello Romitorio and Celestina Fé) are flocking to in great hoards.
As the estate’s entry-level wine, you’ll be pleased to know the difference is certainly not quality – it’s the approachability! This is soft and fruit-forward with a gloriously cherry-driven core, plus touches of cigar box spice, tobacco, and gregarious wild herbs aplenty. With a focused energy, graceful minerality, and dusty chocolate truffle-laden finish, this is simply mind-bending, world-changing wine, y’all! It has no right to be just $31, but that’s what you’re getting with orders of two or more! 95 points and the epic
PAIRING IDEAS: Give this a go with a wood-fired sausage and mushroom pizza, bubbly charred crust, and all.
