It’s almost not even worth reading what we have to say when you have a literal STACK of critics’ raving remarks on a powerhouse Brunello such as this. Alas, we have to get at least one word in: marvelous. That’s it! Over $50 off and stupidly limited… I beg you to get as much as humanly possible.

Il Marroneto was founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Mori, a lawyer from Siena who, as the story goes, was so captivated by the majestic views over the Orcia valley that he bought the property the very next day as a holiday retreat. The estate takes its name from a historic building on the property, going back to the 13th century and originally used for drying chestnuts ("marroni" in Tuscan dialect) that once served the nearby Madonna delle Grazie chapel. Giuseppe planted the first vines in the mid-’70s, and his son Alessandro, who had followed his father into a career in law, made the first vintage by hand in 1980. He was hooked, eventually turning his passion for Brunello into a philosophy of life when he took over the winery in the 1990s.

Set on steep, cool, north-facing slopes at roughly 400-430 meters elevation, just below the town walls of Montalcino, the roughly 8-hectare estate benefits from cool night winds and significant temperature swings that produce wines of stupendous elegance, freshness, and layered complexity. This signature reflects Alessandro's staunchly traditional approach of native-yeast fermentation, minimal intervention, and long aging in large oak casks. Today Alessandro continues the family legacy alongside his son Iacopo, crafting some of the most elegant and long-lived Brunellos in all of Montalcino.

This 2020 is all understated elegance and depth, praised widely as a classic Brunello and a most refined expression of the vintage. The nose leans more floral than fruity, layering violets, rose petals, mint, and orange peel over ripe cherry and darker plum, with intriguing accents of crushed rock and savory herbs. On the palate it's all of those same notes – but amplified – and silky yet robust, carried by cashmere tannins and vibrant, humming acidity that culminates in a zesty blood orange-tinged finish.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Hear me out – a hearty white bean soup with tomato, pancetta, lacinto kale, and loads of parmesan… dream-worthy!

About The Producer

Il Marroneto was founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Mori on the cool, steep slopes just north of Montalcino, placing the family squarely among Brunello's second wave of pioneers who planted their flags before the appellation's global boom took hold. The original cellar dates to 1246 and was once used as a drying room for chestnuts (marroni in the local dialect), which gave the estate its name. Giuseppe's son Alessandro walked away from a career in banking in Rome to take over in the 1990s, and it is under his direction that Il Marroneto has become one of the most sought-after names in Montalcino. The estate now covers 8 hectares of Sangiovese planted on sandy, mineral-rich soils at 430 meters above sea level, where cool night winds and significant diurnal temperature swings produce wines of notable freshness and precision. The portfolio is deliberately tight: a Rosso di Montalcino, a Brunello, and the flagship Madonna delle Grazie, a single-vineyard selection released only in exceptional vintages and aged for over 40 months in large oak casks before a minimum of ten months in bottle. A third generation is now involved, with Alessandro's son Iacopo contributing his own cuvée from barrel selections across the estate. The approach throughout is uncompromisingly traditional, and the results speak for themselves.
