It’s not often we get to taste true Hungarian royalty in a glass—but when we do, it’s unforgettable. A few weeks ago, our team opened a rare 1988 Tokaji Aszú 4 Puttonyos from Hétszőlő Dessewffy, pairing it with blue cheese, foie gras, and apricot tart. Nearly 37 years on, this golden nectar stunned us—lusciously sweet yet balanced with zesty acidity, dried apricot, fig, honey, caramel, and spice. A wine that melts across the palate and lingers long after the last sip. Regal sweetness, perfectly aged, and yours for under $40 with shipping included on 3+ bottles!

The estate traces its roots back to 1502, when the noble Garai family selected seven parcels of vineyard—hence the name “Hétszőlő,” meaning “seven vineyards.” Over the centuries, it passed through some of Hungary’s most influential figures—Gáspár Károli (the pioneering Bible translator), Prince Gábor Bethlen of Transylvania, the Rákóczi family, and ultimately became part of the Habsburg Imperial Estate around 1711. In 2009, the estate joined the prestigious Domaines Reybier group (also owners of Château Cos d’Estournel and Château Marbuzet in Bordeaux), solidifying its position among elite global estates.

About The Producer

Hétszőlő Dessewffy traces its roots back to the early 16th century, when the original “seven vineyards” that gave the estate its name were first cultivated on the prized volcanic slopes of Tokaj. Over the centuries, the estate passed through the hands of noble families, including the Dessewffy family, who were instrumental in shaping its legacy and reputation for producing some of Hungary’s finest sweet wines. Today, Château Hétszőlő continues to thrive as a historic Tokaj estate, farming organically and focusing on both classic aszú wines and dry expressions of Furmint that showcase the unique minerality of the region. With a balance of deep heritage and modern vision, Hétszőlő Dessewffy remains one of Tokaj’s most respected and enduring producers.
