Grattamacco was the second winery established in Bolgheri, founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, who came from Lombardy and saw the potential of this Tuscan coastal strip before almost anyone else. It was at Grattamacco in 1994 that the modern Bolgheri DOC was signed into existence by Cavallari and the heads of Tenuta San Guido, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso. Claudio Tipa of ColleMassari acquired the estate in 2002, bringing in current winemaker Luca Marrone, who has preserved the estate's distinctive identity without altering its character: a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 15% Sangiovese, the latter making Grattamacco unique among Bolgheri estates and giving the wine a distinctive Mediterranean freshness that sets it apart from its peers. The vineyards sit at between 100 and 200 meters above sea level on one of Bolgheri's only two hills, with a panoramic view of the Tuscan coast. The 2019 is the estate's own description: a vintage of great character and richness, where remarkable structure is beautifully balanced by acid freshness and tannic balance, with extreme persistence and verticality as a prelude to marked longevity.
