Roberto Conterno is fond of saying that Francia you drink and Monfortino you chew, and the 2015 Francia tests even that axiom. Antonio Galloni called it a soaring, regal wine endowed with tremendous intensity in all of its dimensions, the most reticent and inward of the 2015 wines, possessing superb textural density and persistence all the way through to an explosive finish, an immense, towering Barolo that will require a number of years to be at its best. Founded in the 1920s and based at the historic Cascina Francia property in Serralunga d’Alba, purchased by Giovanni Conterno in 1974, Giacomo Conterno is universally considered among the greatest traditional Barolo estates in the world. Roberto, who took over in the 1990s, is obsessive in his pursuit of perfection, tasting each wine 40 to 50 times before making a single decision.
Vinous awarded the 2015 Francia 98, Wine Spectator 97, Wine Advocate 97, and James Suckling 94. What impresses most is the supreme elegance of the wine, speaking in hushed whispers and enunciating promises of depth, complexity, and mysterious intrigue that unfold slowly and reveal new elements with each swirl of the glass. These are as limited as they come. Grab them before they’re gone.
