Aldo Vajra was a rebellious 15-year-old student in Turin in 1968 when his father sent him back to the farm in Barolo to learn the toughness of life through fieldwork. Instead he fell in love with the vines and founded G.D. Vajra in 1971, becoming one of the earliest practitioners of organic farming in Piedmont. Today his children Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro continue the work, farming biodynamically and vinifying with minimum intervention in large oak casks. The Ravera cru in Novello is one of the most sought-after additions to the estate’s outstanding single-vineyard lineup, farmed on oxidized red marlstone soils that contribute a richer, more powerful style than the estate’s other sites.
The 2019 Ravera is one of the greatest wines Vajra has ever produced from this cru. Wine Advocate awarded 97, Kerin O’Keefe 97, Vinous 96, Wine Spectator 96, Wine Enthusiast 96, and Jeb Dunnuck 94. Wine Advocate described gorgeous tonality and color, silky sensations followed by dark fruit and concentration, calling Ravera the most sought-after cru in the village of Novello. Vinous called it redolent of red fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper, and orange peel, intensely bright and saline to the core, an especially taut style even for Vajra. Kerin O’Keefe described intensely fragrant aromas of violet, iris, red berry, baking spice, and menthol, luminous, elegantly structured, and focused, with sour cherry, raspberry, star anise, and crushed mint alongside taut, refined tannins. These are incredibly limited. Do not miss them.
