The Fuligni estate sits just north of the town of Montalcino, where its vineyards were known for years under the label "Vigneti dei Cottimelli" until 1997. The estate has always been one of Montalcino's most faithful interpreters of classical Brunello: low yields, meticulous selection, aging for two and a half to three years in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and a small percentage of French tonneaux, and bottling only in vintages that meet their exacting standards. Decanter awarded the 2019 97 points, describing an historically reliable estate that does not disappoint in this vintage, with a striking fusion of chestnut forest, polished wood, fennel, and spiced plum on the nose that is utterly tempting now, filling the mouth with lustrous red berries and pressed violets before tightly woven tannins take hold with profound depth and a drinking window through 2041. James Suckling awarded 98, Wine Advocate 96, Vinous 96, Jeb Dunnuck 96, Wine Spectator 95, and Wine Enthusiast 94. A gorgeous, classic Brunello with plenty of longevity ahead, at a price that is incredibly good for the address. Don't sleep on it.

About The Producer

The Fuligni family, of ancient Venetian and English origin, settled in Montalcino at the beginning of the 20th century, and what Giovanni Maria Fuligni started then has quietly become one of the most respected names in Brunello. Founded in 1923, the estate today is co-owned by Roberto Guerrini Fuligni and his aunt Maria Flora Fuligni, now in her 80s and still a guiding presence on a property she has devoted her life to. Roberto works closely with agronomist Simone Bacconi, winemaker Daniele Zeffirini, and the father-and-son oenology team of Paolo and Jacopo Vagaggini. The estate's 14 hectares of vines sit in an almost continuous strip on the northeastern slope of Montalcino, within the Santa Fiora geological formation of Eocene origin, predominantly rocky marl terrain at altitudes ranging from 380 to 450 meters, one of the most historically prized sectors in the entire appellation. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with aging split between traditional Slavonian oak barrels and smaller Allier tonneaux, and the wines are cellared beneath the family's 16th-century Medicean palazzo — still the Fuligni family residence. The approach throughout is unhurried and uncompromising: in difficult vintages, Fuligni has simply decided not to produce Brunello at all rather than bottle wine that doesn't meet their standards. The results speak to the discipline — wines of class, precision, and remarkable longevity that have earned a loyal following among serious Brunello collectors for over three decades.
