For the 2019 vintage, Giovanni Manetti described the balance in Panzano in Chianti as nearly ideal: never too hot, never too dry, producing a Flaccianello that critics have compared to the great 2001 vintage in its harmony, but with more profundity. Farr Vintners awarded 99, Wine Advocate 98, Rupert Valentini 98, Jeb Dunnuck 97, James Suckling 96, TWI 96, Vinous 94, and Wine Spectator 94. Monica Larner called it another stunning wine that sums up the character of the vintage and reflects the sun-drenched beauty of its quintessentially Tuscan surroundings. Rich concentration and layers of dark fruit wrap thickly over the senses, with tangy acidity and firm tannins carrying the wine forward on a long, mineral-driven finish. Tannin management has become an active pursuit at Fontodi in recent years, with time in barrique reduced in favor of a final six-month resting period in larger oak casks, giving the 2019 a seamless quality that makes it already compelling but built to improve for decades. The price here is incredibly good for Flaccianello at this level of quality. Don't miss it.
