Grown on the most favorable upper stretches of the prized single cru of Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto, this magnificent Barolo is described as “approachable, friendly, and charming” in The Wine Independent’s 96-point review. For the best price anywhere online, this work of precision is an utter THRILL that you must get your hands on, and stat.
Oddero owns a noteworthy four hectares of land within the Scarrone cru – and Roche Rivera comes from only the very best, upper portion with the most desirable exposure. High in altitude at 300 feet elevation, with well-draining sandy and limestone soils, the parcel produces dizzyingly intense and pure wines loaded with mineral-packed tension and exemplary complexity. And that’s exactly what you can expect in this 2018 vintage, with generous notes of wild strawberry, Bing cherry, and red currant framed by pretty accents of fennel, wild sage, cornflower, graphite, and salty mineral undertones.
“It has a lovely softness and roundness without being heavy, a lightness and suppleness of tone but with plenty of intensity and drive at the same time.” – The Wine Independent, 96 points
Figli Luigi Oddero is set in the small northwestern Italian commune of La Morra and boasts a winemaking heritage that traces back to the 1800s with Luigi’s grandparents, who were esteemed winemakers and merchants. Luigi himself developed a profound passion for wine, diligently studying the cultivation and production of his beloved Langhe’s indigenous varietals, while also exploring international grape varieties. Following his passing in 2010, his wife Lena and their children, Maria and Giovanni, continue working together to manage the estate.
In 2012, the renowned winemaker Dante Scaglioni (Bruno Giacosa’s winemaker for 25 years) joined to oversee the winemaking. Alongside his protege, Francesco Versio, Dante elevated the portfolio to remarkable new heights of complexity and expression. Over the years, the family has acquired roughly 70 hectares of vineyard, with over 50 dedicated to Nebbiolo di Barolo. As ever, this is a magnificent Barolo from one of the area’s longest-standing family producers. For the lowest price anywhere online, and entering into its prime drinking window – it is a wholly worthy addition to your cellar!
