The Rancia vineyard takes its name from the historic Rancia farmhouse, once a Benedictine monastery in the Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone of Chianti Classico, at elevations between 400 and 420 meters on southwest-facing alberese limestone and galestro marl soils. The Poggiali family purchased the Felsina estate in 1966, and Giovanni Poggiali has built it into one of the most reliable and serious producers in the denomination, farming 75 hectares of vineyards dedicated primarily to Sangiovese and producing wines known for their ageworthy nature and remarkable consistency. The Rancia has been the estate's flagship since its first vintage in 1983, sourced exclusively from the Poggio a Rancia site, aged in barrique for up to 20 months, and bottled only in vintages that can support the structure and complexity the wine demands. The 2016 is one of the finest Rancias ever made. Decanter awarded 97, Vinous 96+, Wine Advocate 96, and James Suckling 96, with Wine Spectator at 95 and Wine Enthusiast at 94. Antonio Galloni described it as powerful, rich, and explosive, with tremendous drive and a beautiful complexity of wild cherry, white truffle, and tilled earth that was still quite closed at release and needs more time to fully reveal itself. A wine for the patient collector at a price that is extraordinary for this level of critical recognition. Grab it now.

About The Producer

It was 1966 when Domenico Poggiali Felsina took the courageous leap and bought the estate at a time when Italian viticulture was struggling. In the second half of the 1970s Giuseppe Mazzocolin entered the family business paving the way for the beginnings of their international recognition. Their friendship with Luigi Veronelli and collaboration with oenologist Franco Bernabei shaped a developmental strategy that has proven itself extremely coherent, starting with the wines of 1983, the first year of Fontalloro and of Rancia. With Domenico and Giuseppe Poggiali at the helm, an extraordinary development began which, since 1990, also includes Giovanni Poggiali, the oldest of Giuseppe's three sons.
