Ferrington Vineyard is a “deep end” Anderson Valley site, close to the Pacific Ocean and known for its cool, foggy mornings, warm afternoons, and exceptionally balanced fruit. Pinots from this area often fetch close to $100 or more a bottle – but when you get 6 bottles of this FEL Wines beauty, it’s yours for UNDER $25 a bottle!
FEL is one of those under-the-radar industry secrets we’re hesitant to share too loudly and proudly – the winemaking and sourcing are impeccable, and the prices? Even better. It’s a side project of Yountville’s prized Cliff Lede Vineyards, with wines made in tribute to Cliff’s mom, a brilliant gardener and home winemaker named Florence Elsie Lede (peep the gorgeous floral label, also designed in her honor).
This 2022 Pinot Noir comes from the aforementioned Ferrington Vineyard – you might know it if you’re an Anderson Valley Pinot-file, as a few other big players regularly source their fruit from the same site, like Williams Selyem, Arista, and Failla, to name a few. This is a site primed for Pinot perfection – the climate, the soils, the positioning in proximity to the ocean...it all comes together to grow world-class Pinot Noir grapes with massive flavor and complexity. Winemakers Ryan Hodgins and Sarah Green pull so much character the 2022 fruit into the bottle, and for reference, Wine Enthusiast gave the Williams Selyem 2022 Ferrington Pinot a rave 96 points.
The deep red-purple of this wine emits brilliantly captivating notes of black currant, red cherry, and sage, promising a fantastic ride to come. The palate continues with more cherries, plus strawberry and raspberry jam, along with spicy notes of white pepper and cardamom, plus some purple flowers, black tea, grapefruit peel, seashells, and a tingly spearmint finish. This is unendingly delightful, so powerful, and yet somehow delicately layered and exquisitely balanced. A phenomenal Pinot Noir through and through, and could easily bag Williams Selyem prices ($$$) in a blind line-up. But you come to First Bottle for insider access, so absolutely order your 6 bottles and feel the exhilaration of this level of Pinot for our insanely approachable price.
PAIRING IDEAS: Hear me out – roasted fresh sardines, with a stuffing of fresh herbs, garlic, lemon, and breadcrumbs. I love this recipe, and the Mediterranean flair coaxes out the brilliant salinity and mineral tension of the wine.
