Nin-Ortiz is somewhat of a cult producer in the Priorat, so it’s quite lucky we happen to have any at all! 95 points from Wine Advocate AND Jeb Dunnuck, priced like this? A rocking-great Priorat – almost Chateauneuf-like, but with more freshness. Bright, long, fine, and under $35, this is a THRILLING find.
From a partnership between Ester Nin (the winemaker) and Carlos Ortiz, these brilliant, serious, sophisticated wines are biodynamically farmed, French oak-fermented, and utterly beguiling, especially when you factor in the pricing. The estate was founded in 2000 by the couple and has received piles of acclaim from critics year after year.
Planetes Classic is the flagship of the winery, and a solid representation of the long-standing house style. It’s what Ester and Carlos call their “classic” Priorat, blended from the three signature varieties (45% Garnacha, 44% Cariñena, and 11% Garnacha Peluda in the 2022) all grown on terraced slopes.
The final wine is both elegant and savory, with jaw-dropping depth and precision. It’s floral and spicy, fruity and herbal, with iron-flecked minerality and fresh acidity. The balance is *chef’s kiss* – just immaculate – with a whole basket of dark cherries, orange peel, cranberries, black plum, wild herbs, lilacs, black peppercorn, and crushed stones, plus a smoky, savory tinge almost like a drop of barbecue sauce. This is a rare, remarkable wine whose original $65 price feels a tad low, even – making ours just plain nuts. Check the reviews, and then checkout with haste. Free shipping on 6 bottles or more, per usual, and trust us – you’re going to want at least that many!
FOOD PAIRINGS: Speaking of barbecue sauce, this would be a wonder with some smoky pulled pork or brisket. Don’t forget the fixin’s!
