Chiara Boschis is one of the most singular figures in modern Barolo: the first female winemaker in the Langhe, a founding voice of the Barolo Boys movement, and the woman who not only converted her own estate to certified organic farming in 2014 but convinced 80% of the other growers in Cannubi to follow suit. She took over E. Pira after the death of Luigi Pira, the last of his line, with her family purchasing the estate in 1981, and her very first vintage, the 1990 Barolo Riserva Cannubi, won the coveted Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso. Her holding in Cannubi, Barolo’s most celebrated cru, is just 0.7 hectares, and the wine produced from it is one of the most sought-after small-lot Barolos in existence.
The 2011 vintage was warm and generous, and the Cannubi captures the silky, feminine quality of this extraordinary site in full bloom. Vinous awarded 94, Wine Spectator 93, James Suckling 93, and Wine Advocate 93. A wine of terrific fragrance and finesse, with roses, crushed cherry, orange peel, and dried herbs on the nose, giving way to a supple, mid-weight palate of refined tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. Now over 14 years from harvest, this is in a beautiful drinking window that will last another decade. These are extremely limited. Grab them while you can.
