Reaching back to 1854, Domaine Raspail-Ay has a cherished history in the Southern Rhône region of Gigondas, near CdP but at an even higher elevation. And we have their captivating, 94-point 2022 vintage for a slamming deal of under $35. If you love Chateauneuf-du-Pape or beefy Grenache-leading reds, this is right up your alley!

Gigondas, extending northwest from the jagged mountains of Dentelles di Montmirail, has a whole lot in common with Chateauneuf-du-Pape, though its vineyards are placed at even higher altitudes, and its soils are composed of crumbled limestone, producing dense, robust, exotically rustic Grenache-based wines. Domaine Raspail-Ay has been here since 1854, established by Eugene Raspail whose descendants eventually divided the property into what is now known as Chateau Raspail and the fields that make up Domaine Raspail-Ay. Today, the sixth-generation brother and sister, Christophe and Anne-Sophie Ay, steward the estate with the same unwavering dedication to the Gigondas terroir.

The 2022 is built from 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre, raised in the 19 hectares of estate vineyards on vines with an average age of 55, maintained using sustainable farming practices. The Grenache and Mourvèdre aged in old oak foudres, while the Syrah was kept in used and large barrels. So much ripe generosity here, perfectly in line with the aromatic and concentrated fruit of the vintage, and a warmth that will make your skin tingle and toes curl.

After letting it breathe for a bit (give it a solid 30- to 60-minute decant to give it a chance to unfurl itself), you’ll find hearty notes of juicy cherries, kirsch, black olives, and pepper-crusted salami, with this gorgeous floral lift of peonies, lavender, and violet on the finish. It’s graceful and vibrant and umami and spicy – so much going on, and all to love, from a historic, family-led estate in the region. I’d very happily pop this open with red-sauced barbecued meats or a cast iron-baked pizza in the summer. For all that’s going on here, and the level of care within, under $35 feels a bit sinful, but you won’t catch us repenting!

FOOD PAIRINGS: Speaking of cast iron pizza… do it. A simple pepperoni pie in cast iron makes for a scrumptiously easy deep dish situation, crunchy edges and all, and the wine’s characteristics will flawlessly glow.

About The Producer

The dynasty at Raspail-Ay goes back to 1854, when Eugène Raspail, a prominent local figure, built Château Raspail and founded the domaine. The estate has never left family hands since. In 1971, François Ay pushed the authorities to finally elevate Gigondas to its own Cru status, essentially putting the whole appellation on the map. Today, Dominique's son Christophe and daughter Anne-Sophie have joined him in crafting what critics are calling some of the finest wines in the domaine's history. They make one wine, one cuvée, no reserve, no Vieilles Vignes, just a single benchmark Gigondas from 46 acres of old vines on the rugged clay-limestone terraces below the dramatic Dentelles de Montmirail. Simple philosophy, exceptional results.
