Looking for your any-day-of-the-week drinker for the Fall? Well, it’s here! This 92-point dry white from France’s sunny Côtes du Roussillon – made from 40% Grenache Gris, 40% Grenache Blanc, and 20% Roussane – is giving crisp, quenching layers of herbs, orchard fruits, and chalky lemon zest, and for only 15 bucks, it’s convenient to open no matter the day, season, or occasion.

The Lafage family has farmed grapes in Roussillon for more than 200 years, long supplying fruit or making fortified wines through local cooperatives. Seventh-generation winemakers Jean-Marc Lafage and his oenologist wife Eliane Lafage met during their wine studies and travelled the wine world over – California, South America, South Africa, and Australia – to work harvests and make wine. They landed back in France in 1996 to formally take over the family vineyards in 2001.

Jean-Marc decided to move away from the model of selling grapes to local co-ops and shift instead to crafting high-quality wines in-house, focusing on their luscious local terroirs. The estate has grown to over 160 hectares across multiple Roussillon areas, and the pair sticks to minimal interventions, regenerative agriculture, old vines, and climate resistance techniques. All of these choices lead to beautiful wines reflective of the regions and soils – this Cuvée Centenaire growing on gravelly clay and stony Quaternary soils steps from the Mediterranean Sea, imparting a chalky, salty minerality into the wine that is flat-out delightful.

The fruit was hand-harvested from an average of 100-year-old vines in two passes – one early for acidity, the other later for ripe fruit flavor – and then aged in a mix of stainless steel tanks and new French oak. All of this leads to both brightness and just enough roundness – giving up notes of fresh lemon and zest, cantaloupe, bosc pear, juicy peach, a bundle of herbes de Provence, dusty stones, and salty seashells.

A total charmer and just miraculous for a price sitting under $15. Did we mention 92 points? Get plenty for your Fall tablescapes, but this will thrive in the cellar for a good few years, so you may want to double your allocation, actually! Cheers.

FOOD PAIRINGS: In the summer I’d say carpaccio or ceviche, but since it’s Fall, let’s go with a whole roasted chicken with plenty of herbs and lemon butter, or a simple cheese board with your favorite accoutrement.

About The Producer

The Lafage family has been rooted in the Roussillon since 1791, but it took a seventh-generation winemaker with a global perspective to turn a long family history into one of the region's most celebrated modern estates. Jean-Marc Lafage grew up in viticulture, trained as an oenologist, and spent years harvesting and consulting in wine regions across the world before returning to Roussillon with Eliane, his wife and winemaking partner, and taking over the family estate in 1996. Where previous generations had supplied grapes and leaned into the region's tradition of fortified Vins Doux Naturels, Jean-Marc saw the potential for something more ambitious: a terroir-driven estate built around dry wines of genuine complexity and site specificity. The domaine today spans roughly 160 hectares across six distinct zones, from steep schist-laced terraces near the coast to granite-based heights inland, taking in Mediterranean plain, Upper Agly slopes, and Pyrenean foothills along the way. That geological and climatic mosaic, planted to old vines of Grenache Noir, Blanc, and Gris alongside Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Marsanne, and Roussanne, gives the Lafage portfolio remarkable range and depth. The winemaking leans toward restraint: whites and rosés raised in stainless steel for freshness, reds vinified in concrete with careful use of oak, and harvesting almost entirely by hand. In 2026, Jean-Marc made a significant move that underscores his commitment to the wider region, acquiring the struggling Collioure Banyuls Winegrowers' Group and its nearly 500 growers, securing roughly 60% of production across the Banyuls and Collioure appellations under a newly formed entity called Terrasses Vermeilles. For a producer who has spent three decades arguing that Roussillon deserves more serious attention, it was a fitting statement of purpose.
