Pinot Noir
| Burgundy
Le Petit Clos du Cellier Givry 2023 from Domaine du Cellier Aux Moines (“The Monk’s Cellar”) – a wildly good Red Burgundy clocking in at under $45, with roots that dig all the way back to the 12th century. Yes, the year of 1130. While the rest of the world was figuring out armor and feudalism, a group of Cistercian monks was busy tending vines on a sun-drenched, clay-limestone slope above Givry. Solid priorities if you ask me.
Fast forward nine centuries, and the site is still producing stunning Pinot Noir – now under the passionate stewardship of Philippe and Catherine Pascal, who took over in 2004 and lovingly restored the cellar and vineyards to greatness. Today, it’s fully organic and biodynamic, which feels like a poetic return to the monks’ original harmony with the land (minus the wool robes, probably).
My notes: Bright and elegant, with a core of juicy red cherry and wild strawberry, lifted by rose petal and subtle spice. It’s the kind of wine that makes you pause just to appreciate what’s in your glass. Pure Givry charm with a wink of history.
About The Producer
Domaine du Cellier aux Moines is one of Burgundy’s historic estates, with origins tracing back to the 12th century when Cistercian monks first established the vineyards near Givry in the Côte Chalonnaise. The estate was revived in 2004 by the Pascal family, who meticulously restored the ancient cellars and committed to organic and biodynamic farming to honor its storied heritage. Today, under the leadership of Philippe and Catherine Pascal and their daughter Marguerite, Domaine du Cellier aux Moines produces elegant, terroir-focused wines that capture the purity and depth of Burgundy’s limestone soils. With precise, thoughtful winemaking and deep respect for tradition, the domaine stands as a bridge between Burgundy’s monastic past and its vibrant, modern future.
