From one of Beaune’s finest vineyards, the 2022 Premier Cru “Le Clos des Mouches” carries a stunning level of richness and tension. Domaine Chanson is one of the oldest estates in Burgundy, founded in 1750 by Simon Verry. The estate has been owned by the Champagne royalty Bollinger family since 1999, and they’ve made tremendous updates to the vineyards and winery while preserving the core of the domaine’s history. The estate farms around 45 hectares of vineyards throughout the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, including 25 hectares of Premier Cru lands in Beaune.
This Premier Cru Chardonnay comes from the 4.3-hectare Clos des Mouches vineyard in Beaune, from a 2.2-hectare plot on the upper side of the hill with a limestone subsoil covered in sand. The name is tied to the beehives that once resided on the same land (“mouches à miel” means “honey flies”). The 2022 vintage was warm and drought-stricken, with serendipitously timed rains arriving at just the right moment to preserve balance and acidity in the grapes. Grapes were harvested early, and the resulting wines were overall ripe, fresh, and gregarious.
Honey isn’t just a nod to the vineyard’s past life, either. This wine carries notes of crunchy pear, apricot, and honeycrisp apple, all sliced, drizzled in raw honey, and dusted with cinnamon. Accentuations of buttered biscuits, lemon bars, green apple skin, candied ginger, clove, and vanilla bring cheery liveliness, zipped up with a puckering dab of acidity. The suggested retail on this is $185 – a valid price for the terroir, legacy, history, and care poured into the bottle. But our ninja-like First Bottle buyers were able to snag some for a hair under $100 for you, with free shipping on just two. Follow in their stealthy footsteps, and secure some of your own at this stellar price.
FOOD PAIRINGS: Roasted salmon is my favorite easy meal to upgrade any weeknight dinner, and this recipe features orange-marinated, crushed Castelvetrano olives and fresh parsley that are going to hum across the tongue with this refined and complex White Burgundy.
