Clos St.-Jean is an old-vine legend of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and this 94-point 2022 vintage certainly does not disappoint! Showcasing the meticulous care and skill of the winemaking team, this CdP offers a thrilling expression of the region’s terroir and an exceptional balance of concentration and elegance.
Clos Saint-Jean is more than just a rockstar of the Rhône – this estate is one of the finest anywhere in the world. Year in, year out, and we’re absolutely over the moon to taste and offer out these impeccable wines, and 2022 has been described by Wine Spectator as “a ripe, powerful vintage” with reds that are “lush, richly styled, silky and balanced.” This historic property helped change Châteauneuf-du-Pape forever when it began bottling estate wines over a century ago, before the region of Châteauneuf-du-Pape officially existed. Known for their modern, clean, and voluptuous style – Clos Saint-Jean works wonders with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre – and their old-vine plots are the envy of many CdP stalwarts.
“This may well be one of the most exciting addresses not only in France, but in the entire wine world... in short, these wines are not to be missed!” – Robert Parker
If you were to ask us, this winery can do no wrong... and it appears the critics agree. The Grenache was fermented and aged exclusively in concrete – avoiding oak contact to maintain freshness and vivacity – while the Mourvèdre, Syrah, and other grapes are reared in barrel and oak vats, to round out the final product and amplify the glorious spice notes found here.
It’s a stunningly complex, focused, and pure expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that is sure to delight, with an intensity of warm blackberry pie and strawberry jam to meld beautifully with the roasted herbs, fennel, and tobacco elements. It’s ripe and juicy yet so, so fresh, with classic garrigue and elegance wound through its very bones – it simply doesn’t get more delectable than this!
PAIRING IDEAS: Rub some lamb chops with fresh thyme and sear in a hot skillet, topping with a lemony white wine sauce to finish – and watch this rich and brooding CdP really pop!
