Clos du Val is one of the Stags Leap District's founding estates, established in 1972 and famously present at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, and it has been quietly producing some of the most food-friendly, Bordeaux-inflected Cabs in the valley ever since. The 2023 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, showing black cherries and cassis on the nose with hints of tobacco leaf, while the medium to full-bodied palate is firm without being hard or edgy and finishes long and silky. James Suckling described it as refined and earth-driven, with tightly wound black-fruit aromas underlying notes of graphite, bitter chocolate, and cured meats, the palate focused and pure with finely tuned tannins and a generous yet precise finish.

About The Producer

The founding story alone earns Clos du Val a permanent place in Napa Valley lore. John and Henrietta Goelet challenged a young Bernard Portet, fresh out of winemaking school and steeped in Bordeaux tradition, to travel the world and find a place to grow Cabernet Sauvignon that could rival the best on earth. A two-year global search ended in the Stags Leap District, and in 1972 Clos du Val planted its first vines and made its first wines. That debut 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon was one of only six California wines selected for Steven Spurrier's legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris, and when the same wines were retasted in a 1986 rematch, Clos du Val's 1972 Cabernet placed first overall. Portet led winemaking for 37 years, building a house style defined by restraint, balance, and a distinctly French sensibility that set Clos du Val apart from its increasingly extracted Napa neighbors. The estate has never been sold and remains entirely in Goelet family hands, now in its third generation, with Olav Goelet serving as CEO and winemaker Carmel Greenberg and viticulturist Ryan Decker steering the wines forward. The flagship Yettalil, a Bordeaux-style blend from the Stags Leap District estate vineyards, signals clearly that the founding ambition is very much alive and well under new family leadership.
