Crafted by the Thienpont family – the same legendary clan behind Right Bank icon Le Pin – this Merlot-driven charmer is a fabulous value. From the revelatory 2016 vintage, it delivers plush blackberry and plum wrapped around cassis, cocoa, and a touch of graphite, with polish and structure to spare. Serious Bordeaux pedigree, joyful everyday price.

About The Producer

The Thienpont family — Flemish wine merchants who had already invested in Vieux Château Certan in Pomerol since 1924 — acquired Puygueraud in 1946 when George and Monique Thienpont moved from Flanders and restored the 15th-century château. When they arrived, the existing vines were in a state of abandon. George dug them up and devoted the estate to polyculture — apples, kiwis, maize, and a rare cattle breed called the "blond d'Aquitaine," still found on the property today. It was not until 1967, when a new appellation contrôlée was created for the region, that serious vineyard reconstruction began, with the first official vintage following in 1983. Nicolas Thienpont — who had spent years as a philosophy professor before the vines called him back — took charge that year and never looked back. Since 2009, Nicolas and his son Cyrille have worked together, and over 30 years Puygueraud has become the flagship of the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. The estate farms around 40 hectares of clay-limestone soils, producing a predominantly Merlot-based red with Cabernet Franc and a touch of Malbec.
