I think the 2005 Château Mouton Rothschild is pure perfection, and it has a ripe, powerful, yet weightless style not far off the 1982. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in new barrels, it’s just now starting to enter its adolescence phase and has sensational notes of ripe black fruits, smoky, scorched earth, pipe tobacco, and chocolate. Massively rich and opulent on the palate, with building yet sweet tannins and no hard edges, it’s one of those wines that needs to be tasted to be believed. Drink bottles any time over the coming 40+ years.

There is something truly special about this Mouton Rothschild. A wine that initially holds itself back, gently revealing the ripe fruits and beautiful incense. Although there is power and structure here, the palate absolutely dances with its silky tannins. There is a lively tension and energy in this iconic Pauillac that finishes with incredible length, balance and just with a whisper of rose and umami. A triumph, even in such a lauded vintage.

Gorgeous, with singed alder and juniper notes starting to strut their stuff, while the immense core of steeped red currant, blackberry and plum fruit continues to wait in reserve. A light sanguine thread weaves in on the back end, which is driven by a serious bolt of iron. Shows terrific grip, length and cut. Technical Director/Chief Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin said this was a special year for him, because he considers it his first great vintage—he started in 2004. Deep garnet with hint of brick, the 2005 Mouton Rothschild is evolving into unabashed, flamboyant notes of Christmas cake, plum preserves, chocolate-covered cherries, eucalyptus and crème de cassis with beautifully fragrant wafts of potpourri, incense, Indian spices and cigar box. Full-bodied, the palate performs vinous pirouettes with dazzling exotic spice, floral and earthy nuances, framed by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and mineral laced.

The 2005 Mouton Rothschild clearly has a fresher bouquet than the Clerc Milon or d'Armailhac: copious black fruit, cedar, graphite and violet scents soar from the glass, entrancing with beautiful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, quite poised and less ferrous than some of its peers. Mint and veins of dark chocolate are flanked by cracked black pepper towards the bold yet controlled finish. This is drinking supremely well now—a classy Mouton Rothschild that represents the apex of achievement in that decade. Tasted at the château.

Philippe Dhalluin, who joined Mouton Rothschild in 2003 and became technical director the following year, has described 2005 as his first truly great vintage, a wine that finally showed what he could do with this extraordinary raw material. The 2005 blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc was aged entirely in new French oak, and at 13.2% alcohol it represented one of the highest levels ever achieved at the estate. The label features Italian artist and sculptor Giuseppe Penone's meditation on the vine-grower's "green fingers," the vine leaf extending from a splayed hand that will soon close around a glass of Mouton. Jeb Dunnuck awarded the 2005 a perfect 100, Decanter 99, Wine Spectator 98, James Suckling 98, Wine Advocate 98, Vinous 97, and Wine Enthusiast 95. It has been compared to a modern-day 1955 and described as a tannic, backward, concentrated wine built for the ages, now emerging magnificently from its long cocoon: crème de cassis, melted asphalt, roasted espresso, and cedarwood on the nose, massively rich and opulent on the palate, with building yet sweet tannins and a finish that lingers for close to a minute. Farr Vintners' Neal Martin called it one of the most textured, seamless wines out there. Just beginning its adolescence, with a drinking window stretching through 2065 and beyond. The price here is incredible for a Mouton of this vintage and caliber. These are a rare opportunity.

About The Producer

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Cru Classé from the Bordeaux region and one of the world's greatest wines, is owned by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild. The estate includes 205 acres of vines at Pauillac planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (11%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%). In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought Chateau Brane-Mouton. In 1922, his great-grandson Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902-1988) decided to take the future of the estate into his own hands. His 65 years at Mouton bear witness to the strength of his personality, his spirit of enterprise and his sense of innovation. In 1922, he was the first to introduce chateau bottling. In 1926, he built the famous Grand Chai, the majestic 100-meter first year cellar, which has become a major attraction for visitors to Mouton. 1945 marked the start of a fascinating collection of works of art, created every year for the Mouton label by famous painters. In 1973, after a twenty-year battle, Baron Philippe obtained a revision of the 1855 classification and Mouton was officially recognized as a First Growth. In 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild succeeded her father Baron Philippe. She has become the guarantor of the quality of an illustrious wine whose motto proudly proclaims, "First I am, second I was, I Mouton do not change."
