Does it get more iconic than Château Lafite-Rothschild? This fine Pauillac estate was granted a title of the “leader among fine wines” at the Universal Paris Exposition in 1855, and we have the immaculate, TRIPLE 100-point 2016 vintage available today... but with well under 2 cases, it won’t last long!

Chateau Lafite-Rothschild is one of but four classified first growths of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, resulting in the coveted designation as Premier Cru. Lafite’s first-known references date back to 1234 – its name translating from the Gascon language term “la hite,” or “hillock.” The Ségur family organized the land for prime grapevine agriculture in the 17th century, when it began developing a reputation as a world-class winemaking estate, though it’s believed that vineyards had long existed here prior in a more unofficial manner. King Louis XV designated these wines as his ultimate favorite in the 1750s, catapulting the estate to global legend status, and Thomas Jefferson was also known as a consistent procurer of their wines, even visiting the estate. In the 1970s, Baron Eric de Rothschild began implementing new innovations toward excellence and technological advances. Now, his daughter, Saskia de Rothschild, is the sixth generation family member to lead the winemaking efforts of this iconic house.

“On another level and one of the greatest young Bordeaux I’ve ever tasted … this is legendary stuff all the way.” –Jeb Dunnuck, 100 Points

This 100 POINT bottle of perfection – from the revered 2016 Bordeaux vintage – is composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot to construct a magnificently rich, dark purple wine with mountains of character, complexity, and depth. Harmonious and not at all aggressive, this silky-smooth Pauillac is impressively dense, with firm tannins and perfectly integrated oak. Brilliant notes of bursting blue and black berries unfold with structured mineral characters of lead and graphite to discreetly subdue the boldness of the fruit. A fresh undercarriage of violets and dried brush bring in a lovely balance that ties this compelling wine up with an extravagant bow. We can’t believe we’ve got some for way under half-off – this wine is a true collector’s dream and ever worthy of your investment and cellar space.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Braised short ribs in red wine and a medley of fresh herbs, served over pillowy gnocchi, will make for a mind-melting culinary experience.

About The Producer

The name alone carries a weight that almost no other wine on earth can claim. The Lafite estate appears in records stretching back to 1234, and by the early 18th century it had already earned the nickname "The King's Wine" at the court of Versailles, championed by the Maréchal de Richelieu and elevated by Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, who became known as "The Wine Prince." Lafite earned its Premier Grand Cru Classé ranking at the top of the 1855 Classification, and in 1868 Baron James de Rothschild purchased the estate, beginning a family stewardship that has now run for six unbroken generations. Baron Eric de Rothschild led the estate from 1974 until 2018, when his daughter Saskia de Rothschild took over as Chairwoman, with Jean-Guillaume Prats serving as CEO alongside her. The estate covers roughly 112 hectares in Pauillac, planted to approximately 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with the oldest parcel, La Gravière, planted in 1886. Winemaker Éric Kohler oversees vinification, producing the Grand Vin alongside the second wine Carruades de Lafite. The style is the benchmark for Pauillac elegance: precise, restrained, and built for decades in the cellar, less thunderous than Latour or Mouton but arguably more hauntingly complex than either.
