Chateau Lafite-Rothschild is one of but four classified first growths of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, resulting in the coveted designation as Premier Cru. Lafite’s first-known references date back to 1234 – its name translating from the Gascon language term “la hite,” or “hillock.” The Ségur family organized the land for prime grapevine agriculture in the 17th century, when it began developing a reputation as a world-class winemaking estate, though it’s believed that vineyards had long existed here prior in a more unofficial manner. King Louis XV designated these wines as his ultimate favorite in the 1750s, catapulting the estate to global legend status, and Thomas Jefferson was also known as a consistent procurer, even visiting the estate. In the 1970s, Baron Eric de Rothschild began implementing new innovations toward excellence and technological advances. Now, his daughter Saskia de Rothschild is the sixth-generation family member to lead the winemaking efforts of this iconic house.
