Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux's great historic estates, sitting in Talence just across the road from its more famous sibling, first-growth Château Haut-Brion. The property dates back to the 16th century, coming into being after it was purchased by Jean de Pontac in 1533 – the same man behind the birth of several of Bordeaux's best estates. Though it's not a classified first growth, it's long been regarded as a qualitative equal of Haut-Brion, frequently its equal and in some years even better, so much so that it can be seen as an "honorary" first growth. The estate farms a compact vineyard on classic Graves gravel over clay, sand, and limestone, and the red is aged in 100% new French oak for an average of around 22 months, with production of only about 5,000 cases a year.

The 2021 is a product of a cooler, more challenging Bordeaux vintage, and it leans into that classic, fresher persona beautifully. It's a blend of roughly 48% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Cabernet Franc that brandishes black raspberries, dried flowers, tobacco, loamy earth, and a lovely spicy character on the nose, leading to a pure, medium-bodied, incredibly polished palate with fine tannins, a graceful mouthfeel with no hard edges, and a gorgeous finish. Critics adore it (up to 97 points worth!) and James Suckling said it is “so drinkable now” but can age for decades to come. About The Producer

Separated from its legendary neighbor Château Haut-Brion by nothing more than a road, La Mission Haut-Brion has spent centuries making a compelling case for unofficial First Growth status. The estate's roots trace to 1540, but its modern identity was shaped by the Woltner family, who purchased it in 1919 and drove the winemaking to extraordinary heights through much of the 20th century. In 1983, Domaine Clarence Dillon — already owner of Haut-Brion — acquired La Mission, reuniting the two storied neighbors under one roof for the first time. Today both properties share the same technical team led by Jean-Philippe Delmas, and the winemaking across 30 hectares of deep Pessac-Léognan gravel continues to set the standard for what the Left Bank can achieve outside the Médoc — more muscular and structured than Haut-Brion, yet possessing that same haunting complexity that keeps collectors chasing every vintage.
